SANJOSE will Build the JRC (Joint Research Centre) Building of the European Commission in Seville

17/07/2025

The European Commission has awarded SANJOSE Constructora, in joint venture with SEMI, the construction works for the JRC (Joint Research Centre) Building of the European Commission - a landmark space for innovation and sustainability located on La Cartuja Island in Seville, specifically on the site once occupied by the Pavilion of Discoveries during Expo ’92.

The project features a “canopy of pergolas” or “solar dome” inspired by Seville’s shaded plazas and streets, designed to protect the entire JRC site - including the square, garden, and building - supported by a series of photovoltaic-covered columns that contribute positively to the building’s operational carbon footprint. The design emphasizes the use of locally sourced materials (limestone, wood, and ceramic tiles), selected to achieve the top 5-leaf VERDE certification from Spain’s Green Building Council.

Inside the JRC building, offices and research units are combined with public programs and services, including dining areas, a conference center, and social spaces. This layout is conceived to be flexible and adaptable to the evolving needs of a facility that will accommodate more than 400 professionals.

From a design standpoint, this building represents - in the words of the Commission - “the symbol of the New European Bauhaus and its first carbon-positive building.”
